iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max Features: What's New and How They Compare to Older iPhones

iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max Features: What's New and How They Compare to Older iPhones

A20 Pro. A smarter camera. A smaller Dynamic Island. Here's what's expected from Apple's next Pro iPhones.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to arrive in September 2026, bringing Apple's next generation of Pro iPhones to the autumn launch.

And this year, the interesting changes aren't necessarily about making the iPhone look completely different. Instead, Apple appears to be focusing on what's underneath the glass.

  • A new A20 Pro chip built using expected 2nm technology.
  • A variable-aperture 48MP main camera.
  • A potentially smaller Dynamic Island.
  • A more efficient display.
  • Improved battery life.
  • New connectivity hardware.
  • And a few subtle design changes.

But how significant are these changes if you're using an older iPhone? And how different will the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max actually be? We've compared the expected new models with previous Pro generations to see how Apple's iPhone has evolved.

Could 2026 also bring Apple's first foldable iPhone?

There's another reason this year's iPhone launch could be a big one. Apple is reportedly preparing its first foldable iPhone.

Current reports suggest the foldable could be unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026, although Apple has not confirmed the product or launch date. Some reports also suggest the foldable could go on sale slightly later because of production constraints.

Unlike a traditional flip phone, Apple's reported design is expected to fold like a book, opening into a much larger display. And this isn't just a slightly bigger iPhone.

A phone that opens into something closer to a tablet. Current reports point to:

  • Around 5.5 inches when closed
  • Around 7.8 inches when opened
  • A book-style folding design
  • A foldable OLED display
  • A much less noticeable crease than some existing foldables
  • An A20-series chip
  • Two rear cameras
  • Touch ID instead of Face ID, according to current reports
  • A very thin design
  • A premium price potentially starting around $2,000

These specifications are still based on reports and leaks, so the final design could be different. So what's the appeal? More screen, without carrying a tablet. Closed, it could work much like a normal iPhone. Open, the larger display could make things like:

  • Watching videos
  • Reading
  • Multitasking
  • Browsing
  • Working
  • Using two apps at once feel completely different.

Apple is also reportedly preparing software specifically for the foldable form factor, with iOS 27 containing references that suggest Apple is building support for devices that can detect their folded state and opening angle.

Will the foldable launch with iPhone 18 Pro? That's what current reporting suggests. The expected autumn 2026 line-up could therefore include:

  • iPhone 18 Pro
    The smaller traditional Pro.
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max
The larger traditional Pro, with the biggest battery.
  • Apple's foldable iPhone
    A completely new form factor.

The standard iPhone 18 is expected to arrive later, in spring 2027.  There is some uncertainty around the foldable's availability date. It could be announced in September and go on sale slightly later, potentially because of limited initial production.

Is it actually an iPhone 18? Not exactly. Apple hasn't confirmed the name. Current reports have referred to it as the iPhone Fold and iPhone Ultra, but neither name is official.

What's new on iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max?

The two models are expected to share most of their major technology. The biggest difference is expected to be size and battery capacity. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to retain a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max should have a 6.9-inch display. Current reporting also points to a considerably larger battery advantage for the Pro Max.

So rather than thinking of them as two completely different phones, think of them as: Same Pro technology. Different size. Let's look at what's actually changing.

1. A20 Pro: Apple's next generation of silicon

This could be the biggest upgrade you won't actually see. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to introduce Apple's A20 Pro chip, reportedly manufactured using a 2nm process. That's a step beyond the 3nm technology used by the A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro.

Why does that matter? A smaller manufacturing process can allow more transistors to fit into the chip, potentially improving both performance and efficiency. Current reports also suggest Apple could use new packaging technology alongside the 2nm process.

What could you notice?

  • Gaming- More processing and graphics power.
  • Photography- Faster computational image processing.
  • Video- More headroom for demanding recording and editing.
  • AI- More capability for increasingly demanding on-device processing.
  • Battery- Potentially better efficiency for the same workload.

The iPhone 17 Pro is already extremely capable, so the A20 Pro isn't going to suddenly make your 17 Pro feel ancient. But compare it with an iPhone 11 or 12? That's a very different story.

2. A variable-aperture 48MP camera

This could be one of the most interesting changes. The iPhone 17 Pro already has an impressive camera system, including three 48MP rear cameras. So Apple doesn't necessarily need to add another megapixel. Instead, reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max could introduce a variable-aperture main camera.

What does variable aperture actually mean? The aperture controls how much light enters a camera. With a variable aperture, the camera can adjust this depending on the scene.

More light when it's dark. More control when it's bright. It could potentially help with:

  • Low-light photography
  • Exposure
  • Depth of field
  • Background blur
  • Video exposure

It's an interesting change because Apple would be improving the camera's physical control, rather than simply increasing the megapixel count. And according to current reporting, this upgrade is expected on both the Pro and Pro Max.

3. A smaller Dynamic Island

The Dynamic Island arrived with the iPhone 14 Pro. It could finally be getting smaller. Reports suggest Apple may move part of the Face ID system underneath the display, allowing the Dynamic Island to become narrower on the iPhone 18 Pro models.  The idea is simple:

More uninterrupted display. It won't make the screen physically bigger. But reducing the cutout could make the top of the display feel cleaner when you're:

  • Watching videos
  • Reading
  • Browsing
  • Gaming
  • Using apps that extend into the top of the display

It's a relatively small change. But unlike a new processor buried inside the phone... You'll actually see it.

4. A more efficient display

The display sizes aren't expected to change dramatically.

iPhone 18 Pro (6.3-inch) and iPhone 18 Pro Max (6.9-inch)

Both are expected to continue using ProMotion technology with refresh rates up to 120Hz. The more interesting change could be LTPO+ display technology. The goal isn't necessarily a higher refresh rate. It's better efficiency. The display can adjust how frequently it refreshes depending on what you're doing, helping reduce unnecessary power consumption.

Combined with the A20 Pro and newer modem hardware, that could contribute to longer battery life. And considering how much time we spend staring at our phones... That's probably more useful than another specification you forget five minutes after reading it.

5. Battery life: Pro vs Pro Max

Here's where the two models could have a more meaningful difference. The Pro Max has always had more room inside its larger body. And current reports suggest Apple could use that space for an even larger battery.

One recent leak points to approximately 4,288mAh for the iPhone 18 Pro and 5,567mAh for the Pro Max, although these figures are not official and should be treated cautiously. The same reporting suggests the Pro Max could see a much larger year-on-year battery increase than the Pro.

So:

The Pro Max may also be slightly thicker, potentially allowing Apple to accommodate the larger battery. That's a trade-off many people would happily make.

6. Apple's C2 modem

The iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to use Apple's C2 modem, following Apple's move towards its own cellular modem technology. The expected benefits include:

  • Improved cellular connectivity
  • Better power efficiency
  • New 5G capabilities
  • Potential satellite connectivity

Reports also point to a new N2 wireless chip, following the N1 introduced in the current generation. The N2 is expected to build on technologies such as Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, although the exact improvements haven't been confirmed.

You probably won't wake up thinking: “Lovely. My modem is better.” But you might notice your phone lasts longer while using demanding connectivity. And that's the point.

7. Camera Control could become simpler

Camera Control was introduced with the iPhone 16 Pro and is now part of the Pro experience. For the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, reports suggest Apple could simplify the control by removing some of its touch-sensitive and haptic functionality while retaining pressure sensitivity.

This isn't necessarily a headline feature. But it could make Camera Control feel more straightforward. Sometimes... less is more.

8. A subtle design refresh

Don't expect the iPhone 18 Pro to look completely different. Current reports suggest the basic design will remain familiar, including the 6.3-inch Pro and 6.9-inch Pro Max sizesand the rear camera plateau. But there could be subtle changes:

  • Slightly thicker Pro Max
  • More seamless rear finish
  • Changes around the rear Ceramic Shield
  • New colours
  • Smaller Dynamic Island

One reported standout colour is Dark Cherry, alongside Light Blue, Dark Gray and Silver. So... Not a revolution. More of an Apple-style refinement.

iPhone 18 Pro vs Pro Max: what's actually different?

This is important because the two phones are expected to be very similar.

So which one should you choose?

If you want the same Pro technology in a smaller phone, the Pro makes more sense. If you want the biggest display and potentially the longest battery life, the Pro Max is the obvious choice.

You don't appear to be paying for a fundamentally different camera or processor. You're choosing how much phone you want.

iPhone 18 Pro & Pro Max vs older iPhones

How much has Apple's Pro iPhone actually changed?

Looking at just the iPhone 17 Pro doesn't tell the whole story. The more interesting comparison is how Apple's Pro technology has evolved over several generations.

What if you have an older iPhone?

This is where the iPhone 18 Pro could become much more interesting.

Coming from iPhone 11, 12 or 13?

You're looking at multiple generations of change. The difference won't simply be a faster processor. You'll be moving through improvements in:

  • Display
  • Camera
  • Battery
  • Performance
  • Connectivity
  • USB-C
  • AI capabilities
  • Overall efficiency

The jump should be much more noticeable than upgrading from an iPhone 17 Pro. Our take: This could be a significant upgrade.

Coming from iPhone 14 or 15?

There's still a lot to gain. You'll get several generations of processor development, newer camera technology, improved battery efficiency and the reported iPhone 18 features. Our take: A meaningful upgrade, depending on what you use your phone for.

Coming from iPhone 16?

This is more nuanced. Your iPhone is still relatively modern. The iPhone 18 Pro's reported camera, chip and efficiency improvements could be appealing, but you don't suddenly need a new phone. Our take: Interesting, but not essential.

Coming from iPhone 17 Pro?

Now we're getting picky. The iPhone 17 Pro already has a powerful A19 Pro chip, a 48MP Pro Fusion camera system, ProMotion and a strong battery. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to improve those areas rather than completely reinvent them.

Our take: Upgrade for the new technology. Not because your 17 Pro is suddenly outdated. And honestly... That's probably the healthiest way to think about any annual phone upgrade.

Waiting for iPhone 18 Pro? Protect your current iPhone now.

You don't need an iPhone 18 Pro to start looking after your screen. If you're currently using an iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 or 17, you're still spending plenty of time looking at it.

Ocushield's anti-blue-light iPhone screen protector combines reinforced tempered glass with blue-light filtering, while maintaining up to 95% screen clarity. It's designed and developed by optometrists in the UK and registered as a Class 1 Medical Device with the MHRA and FDA.

It filters up to 54% of blue light between 400–470nm and up to 99% of UV and blue-light emissions between 300–400nm. And no... Your screen won't suddenly turn orange. We wouldn't do that to you.

What should you look for in an iPhone screen protector?

Whether you're waiting for the iPhone 18 Pro or protecting the phone already in your hand, look for five things.

1. The correct fit- A screen protector should be designed for your exact iPhone model. Don't assume an older protector will fit a newer phone simply because the display sizes look similar.

2. Good screen clarity- Your iPhone has a very good display. Your screen protector shouldn't ruin it.

3. Meaningful blue-light filtering- Don't just look for “blue-light protection”. Check which wavelengths are filtered and by how much.

4. Proper screen protection- Look for quality tempered glass designed to help protect against everyday scratches and knocks.

5. Easy installation- Because spending 20 minutes trying to remove one microscopic bubble from your new phone isn't anyone's idea of fun.

What about blue light?

Blue light isn't inherently bad. It's naturally present in daylight and plays a role in keeping us alert. The bigger conversation is about when, how much and how often we're exposed to it, particularly in the evening.

That's why Ocushield focuses on blue-light filtering alongside better screen habits.A screen protector isn't an excuse to scroll until 2am. Sadly. The healthiest screen time is still the screen time you don't spend on your phone.

But when you are using your device, managing your screen environment is one sensible part of the bigger picture.

So... is the iPhone 18 Pro worth waiting for?

If you're coming from an older iPhone, the reported improvements could add up to a significant upgrade. If you're already using an iPhone 17 Pro, it's a much closer call. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max appear to be about refinement rather than reinvention.

  • A faster chip.
  • A more flexible camera.
  • A smaller Dynamic Island.
  • A more efficient display.
  • Better connectivity.
  • Potentially much better battery life on the Pro Max.
  • And a few design changes to keep things interesting.

We'll know exactly what Apple has planned when the official announcement arrives. Until then, don't let the rumours convince you that your current iPhone is suddenly unusable. It isn't. And if you're upgrading in September... Protect the screen from day one.

New iPhone. Same screen time.

Whether you're counting down to the iPhone 18 Pro launch or perfectly happy with the iPhone already in your hand, your screen is still the thing you spend hours looking at.
