Ocushield and Mobile Phones Direct Collaborate on Parental Controls Campaign

In a digital world, online child safety is more important than ever. The rise in technology has seen a new generation of children grow up staring at tech toys, and gadgets - not to mention looking at smartphones from a young age. While these children may have more knowledge of technology than previous generations, their eyesight is still developing, vulnerable and needs to be monitored.

Here at Ocushield, we use a team of optometrists and tech experts to focus on the damage that blue “screen” light can cause the eyes. Alongside defining blue light, we aim to reduce the damage done from smartphone screens through the use of Ocushield - a screen protector that blocks harmful blue light.

After all, one of the most important contributions parents can make to their child’s development is to try and limit how long they are exposed to screens of various forms - be it smartphone, television or laptop. The biggest way parents can do this is by setting a time limit per day, and stick to it.

However, it’s not just crucial to protect children from the physical damage of smartphones and harmful blue light, it’s also important to protect them from other online dangers, often via online parental controls. Parental controls are features that provide parents with the ability to monitor their child’s internet usage, usually in the form of an app, as well as restricting them from certain types of content that could be harmful.

Ocushield recommends an age-appropriate gift

With our experience of the issues surrounding parental control of access to modern technology, we were recently invited to be involved with a new campaign from Mobile Phones Direct based around the best gifts for children that were age-appropriate, as well as safe and parentally protected. Having noticed an increase in the demand for tech gifts and toys in the run-up to Christmas, they have created an age-appropriate gift guide, split into age groups.

As pioneers of safe technology with Ocushield, Mobile Phones Direct asked to feature us in their How to Choose an Age-Appropriate Children’s Gift This Christmas blog post, where our founder and leading Optometrist, Dhruvin Patel, suggested an age-appropriate gift recommendation for 3-7-year-olds, using his years of tech expertise.

Dhruvin’s recommendation was uniquely useful for picking a gift that will provide education and entertainment to children while keeping them safe online. His comments also helped Mobile Phones Direct understand the benefits of Ocushield.
